Gambhir Says Bumrah’s Test Schedule in England Still Unclear

Bumrah

With Team India set to leave for their highly awaited five-match Test series in England on June 5, all attention is on Jasprit Bumrah and whether he will be fully fit to play the entire tour. Head coach Gautam Gambhir spoke to the media in Mumbai before the team’s departure and highlighted that Bumrah’s availability remains uncertain, with the team planning to manage his workload carefully throughout the series.

Bumrah is one of India’s most important bowlers but has had a history of injuries. Earlier this year, during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney, he suffered a stress reaction in his lower back. That injury kept him out of action for nearly three months, including during the ICC Champions Trophy, which India won without him.

Since recovering, the 31-year-old made his return in IPL 2025 for the Mumbai Indians. However, he missed the first four matches to focus on his rehab and fitness. The BCCI and medical staff have been closely monitoring his condition to ensure he’s not overworked during the upcoming England tour. Gautam Gambhir stated that the team has not yet decided exactly how many matches Bumrah will play or which ones, and they will continue to assess his fitness as the series progresses.

Gautam Gambhir said they haven’t yet decided which three matches Jasprit Bumrah will play in the England Test series. He explained that they will talk to Bumrah and decide based on how the series goes. The team’s results and the direction of the series will play a big role in that decision. Gambhir also mentioned that Bumrah understands the situation well, and that awareness is important. He shared this during the pre-departure press conference, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
